How much does a smog check cost at VIP Smog?

What is a STAR Certified smog station?
A STAR Certified station meets the California Bureau of Automotive Repair’s (BAR) highest standards for accuracy and integrity. VIP Smog is STAR Certified, which means we can perform all types of smog inspections including tests for vehicles that have been directed to a STAR station by the DMV. Not all smog shops can do this — only STAR stations are authorized for directed vehicles.
Do I need an appointment for a smog check?
No appointment is necessary. VIP Smog welcomes walk-ins during all business hours. Most smog checks take about 15–20 minutes, so you can be in and out quickly. If you prefer to schedule a specific time, you can book an appointment online.
What vehicles need a smog check in California?
In California, most gasoline-powered vehicles that are 8 years old or newer are exempt from biennial smog checks. Vehicles older than 8 model years require a smog check every two years for DMV registration renewal. Diesel vehicles 1998 and newer with a gross vehicle weight of 14,000 lbs or less also require smog checks. Hybrid vehicles follow the same rules as gasoline vehicles. Electric vehicles and motorcycles are exempt.
What if my car fails the smog test?

What should I bring to my smog check?
Please bring your vehicle registration or DMV renewal notice. That’s all you need. We handle all the paperwork and electronic submission to the DMV. Make sure your check engine light is off before coming in — a lit check engine light is an automatic failure.

Yes! VIP Smog is equipped and certified to perform diesel smog checks. We test diesel vehicles model year 1998 and newer with a gross vehicle weight rating of 14,000 lbs or less. We also have RV and motorhome access, so larger vehicles are welcome.
How often do I need a smog check in California?
California requires smog checks every two years (biennially) when you renew your vehicle registration. You also need a smog check when you first register a vehicle in California (change of ownership) or when registering an out-of-state vehicle. The DMV will notify you on your renewal notice if a smog check is required.
